Changing Elections

Life Events

The following are examples of Life Events that allow you the opportunity to make election changes during the plan year:

  1. Marriage, divorce, legal separation
  2. Birth or adoption of a child
  3. Change in child custody
  4. Death of spouse or child
  5. Change in eligibility status (part-time to full-time or vice versa)
  6. Change in spouse’s benefits or employment status

If you experience a Life Event during the plan year, you must notify the Benefits Service Center and make your election changes within 30 days of the event. If you fail to do so within this timeframe, you must wait until the next Open Enrollment Period to make those changes. You may be asked to provide documentation to support the life event change (i.e., marriage certificate, birth record). Election changes will take effect on the first day of the month following the life event date.
